My Journey, My Why

Looking back, it’s almost impossible to believe I’m still here. There was a time when the darkness felt suffocating when giving up seemed like the only solution to escape the daily struggle to keep living. I felt so alone and truly believed that the only way to give my kids the best in life, was by not being here to be in theirs.

Something inside me refused to let go. A tiny flicker of light, a whisper that said my life had meaning and purpose. I know now that the moral compass that I was inherently born with is a big part of what kept me alive. While part of my mind kept whispering that everyone would be better off without me, the “logical Suzi” knew what a lie that was.

I have to tell you; it is a struggle that is unexplainable-the belief that I should die coupled with the co-belief that I HAD to live.

With tremendous effort, I made the choice to keep fighting, to seek help, and to cling to any shreds of hope I could find. The defining point for me was when I consciously chose to live and use my story to prevent future tragedies.

My journey taught me many lessons, but ultimately, the most profound was this: the teen years of adolescence shape us in ways we can scarcely comprehend at the time. The values we acquire, the self-worth we cultivate, the resilience and moral compasses we develop—they become the lenses through which we interpret the world for the rest of our lives—the very lenses through which we view ourselves as adults later on in life.

That’s why I felt inexplicably drawn to working with teenagers after clawing my way back from the brink. I knew firsthand the unique vulnerabilities of that age, the self-doubt and identity struggles, and the pressures from every direction. I knew that if we could start there, in those early years, we could equip these children with the tools that could ultimately head off tragedy in the future.

While my “why” was rooted in a dark place, the result - Teen Warrior Academy-is firmly grounded in shining a light of hope to help teens and parents navigate what can be very tumultuous years.
